Classic Beef Bobotie

Classic beef bobotie is a traditional South African dish with a flavorful curry-spiced beef filling topped with a creamy egg custard. It’s a comforting and savory meal that’s sure to please everyone at the table.

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 slice white bread, soaked in milk
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. In a bowl, mash the soaked bread and mix with the beef, along with raisins, curry powder, sugar, and vinegar. Season with salt and black pepper.
  5. Transfer mixture to a baking dish and press down evenly.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Pour over the beef mixture.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is set.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
