Arabic Date Cake (Kek Tayeb)

Arabic Date Cake, or Kek Tayeb, is a moist and sweet dessert made with chopped dates and a hint of cinnamon. It’s a traditional treat with a rich flavor and a perfect accompaniment to tea or coffee.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups pitted dates, chopped
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. Pour boiling water over chopped dates and let sit for 10 minutes. Mash slightly with a fork.
  3. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  4. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until combined. Fold in the date mixture.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.
