Classic beef bobotie is a traditional South African dish with a flavorful curry-spiced beef filling topped with a creamy egg custard. It’s a comforting and savory meal that’s sure to please everyone at the table.
INGREDIENTS
- 500g ground beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 slice white bread, soaked in milk
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- In a bowl, mash the soaked bread and mix with the beef, along with raisins, curry powder, sugar, and vinegar. Season with salt and black pepper.
- Transfer mixture to a baking dish and press down evenly.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Pour over the beef mixture.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is set.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
