Baklava is a rich and sweet pastry made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and honey syrup. This classic Mediterranean dessert is both decadent and delicious.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 package phyllo dough, thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups finely chopped walnuts
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup honey
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- In a bowl, mix chopped walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle a portion of this mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Continue layering phyllo dough and nut mixture, ending with 8 layers of phyllo dough.
- Cut the baklava into diamond shapes before baking.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, combine water and honey in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes and let cool.
- Pour the honey syrup over the hot baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.
- Allow to cool completely before serving.
